Our organization was incorporated in 1975 to advocate for community accessibility and to provide recreational programs for adults with physical disabilities.

In 1982, the first supportive housing program with 24/7 attendant services was established, to assist adults with physical disabilities to live independently. In 1984, an attendant outreach program was developed, which supports adults with physical disabilities throughout Guelph and the surrounding area to remain in their chosen living arrangements.

In 1991, Willow Place was built as a second supportive housing site to address the growing need for supportive housing units for adults with physical disabilities.

In 2006, our services expanded to include the Home Help program, which provides homemaking and shopping assistance to older adults and adults with a disability in Guelph and south Wellington.

In 2008, through the provincial Aging At Home Strategy, our services were again expanded to provide home-based supports to seniors residing in three seniors complexes within the City of Guelph, including one supportive housing site.

Today, we continue to value respect, dignity and individuality by promoting freedom of choice and by encouraging the individual's right to make decisions, to direct services and to establish and maintain personal lifestyles. Guelph Independent Living is all about creating friendships, fostering community participation, removing barriers, and providing information, advocacy and support services.
